Elimination - Sunday July 8 2007 - Alastaro
Sunday elimination started with a continuous drizzling rain soaking the pits,
cars, spectators and race track. The way it kept on it seemed to be another rain
out just like the first race at St Pod. Forecasts promised better weather
midday, and at 2 PM it stopped raining and the track staff brought out the jet
drier and sweepers.
Still it took a while and some oil down clean ups ate even more time and the
Funny Cars started running a quarter past 6 with an 8 PM curfew. The question
was if there was going to be time to run a semi final round since the finals
would be out of reach in that time span.
Kjell who qualified #6 was facing #3 Jörgen Johnsson, both cars can run decent
times, and on a weekend like this when everyone seemed to struggle more or less
it was an open case who would win.
Johnsson reacted quicker on the starting line, but Kjell went after him when
suddenly the blower belt broke. No supercharger boost, no power, Kjell coasted
to a 6.587 @ 299.44 km/h while Jörgen Johnsson also had problems and got of the
throttle early, scoring 6.340 @ 296.92 km/h, enough to take the win.
There wasn't going to be any more racing this weekend, after the first round
another rain shower brought the whole event to a halt and no more racing was
possible. After 2 FIA races, only 1 round of elimination has been run. Some
better weather for race 3 at Mantorp Park is desperately needed. Kjell and
Pritona Racing will be there.
